From a Surprise Upgrade to a Global Idea.
It started in SoHo, New York City. My then-fiancé and I had just gotten engaged and were celebrating with a quick city getaway. We casually mentioned our engagement at check-in, and by pure luck, we were upgraded to the hotel’s penthouse suite.
That moment changed everything.
We looked at each other and thought:
Why are these kinds of experiences locked away behind status levels and credit card games?
What followed was a deep dive into the world of elite travel status, points hacking, and hotel perks. It was fascinating—and completely exhausting. Every upgrade felt like a reward, but the hours we spent chasing them started to add up.
Still, it paid off. When we left for our honeymoon, we had every detail mapped out. We were upgraded at every hotel. We got champagne, suites, and thoughtful touches that made us feel truly celebrated.
And yet…
Planning it all nearly broke me.
